The Michael Long Foundation (MLF) is committed to creating opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with a focus on empowering young people through education, football, leadership and personal development.
Established on the legacy of Michael Long, the Foundation works to create pathways that support young people to realize their potential, build confidence, develop leadership skills and shape positive futures for themselves and their communities.
A key part of the Foundation’s work is the Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre (MLLLC) in Darwin, operated by the Australian Football League Northern Territory (AFLNT). Since opening in 2015, the Centre has provided a space for education, leadership and community programs that use the power of football to engage, inspire and create opportunities for young people.
Education, Leadership and Personal Development
The MLLLC delivers education and leadership programs that recognize the important role football plays in the lives of many young people. Through an AFL-themed curriculum, participants are encouraged to build self-confidence, strengthen school engagement, develop life skills and explore opportunities beyond the football field.
Programs focus on supporting positive educational outcomes, school attendance and engagement, completion of secondary education, work readiness and awareness of future study, training and employment pathways.
The Foundation’s vision extends beyond sport. It is about creating environments where young people feel supported, connected to culture and community, and empowered to become leaders who make a positive contribution to the lives of others.
Community Football and Pathways
The Michael Long Foundation has a longstanding commitment to supporting AFLNT’s remote football projects, recognizing the important role football plays in connecting communities, creating opportunities and inspiring young people.
Through this support, the Foundation aims to promote greater equity and access to football, increase the visibility of talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander footballers, and strengthen pathways for male and female players to progress into elite football programs.
We believe talent exists in every community and that all young people should have the opportunity to develop their skills, pursue their aspirations and reach their full potential, regardless of where they live.
